Don’t Wait For Your Tax Refund – Increase Your Take Home Pay Today

DollarVersity - Don't Wait For Your Tax Refund - Increase Your Take Home Pay Today

Let’s face it, we can all use more in our weekly/bi-weekly/semi-monthly paychecks. Yes, it would be difficult to walk into the boss’ office today and judiciously argue your merits for a raise with the economy in the state of disarray it is (regardless of short-term optimism). There are, however, ways in which you can increase your net income today–or just as soon as your HR Department can process the changes. They are quite easy, but do require that you give up your large tax refund which may turn some people off. What’s more, is that by getting more of your income in your paychecks, you can accomplish your financial goals faster. That last line may be just the motivation some people need to adjust the way they view their big tax refund preference

When Do You Ask For Help With Finances?

buried-in-bills

Times are tough. The stock market appears to be regressing on an almost daily basis. Oil prices continue to hover near all-time highs. Foreclosures and job cuts are still haven’t fallen much. Talks of recession are an almost daily occurrence. You start to notice that while your expenses are increasing, your paychecks (if you are lucky) are staying the same and bills are starting to mount. Do you seek help now in the hopes of avoiding financial disaster, or do you wait until the phone starts ringing off the hook with people looking to collect their money, or do you do nothing at all?

Black Friday Proves People Are Just Lazy With Finances

DollarVersity-Black Friday Proves People Are Just Lazy With Finances

Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time abut being with family and friends, giving thanks for what we have in our lives, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and perhaps some football as well. Once the day is over (and now with stores opening at midnight, probably before the day is complete) people’s attentions turn to the next “holiday” that immediately follows: Black Friday, the unofficial kick-off to the holiday gift-giving season. While Thanksgiving is supposed to be about giving thanks and being with loved ones, thousands of stores require employees to cut short their holiday in order to return to work to stock shelves and prepare for the throngs of shoppers that will descend upon the stores come the early morning hours of the fourth Friday in November.

20 Ways to Waste Your Money…According to Who?

DollarVersity - 20 Ways to Waste Your Money...According to Who?

A couple of days ago, I found an article from Kiplinger Online called “20 Ways to Waste Your Money” which outlines a variety of ways in which people “waste” money. My question is, these are “wastes” according to whose ideals and beliefs? There are obviously people who have enough money to spend on anything they want, and those who don’t have the money to buy anything extra above the absolute necessities. But what about the people who fall in the middle, who make a moderate amount of money and with proper planning can afford to make the purchases that the article “wastes”? I am not going to run through the whole list, but rather, I am just going to touch on a couple of the points which I agree and disagree with the most.

Emergency Funds: A Vital Part Of Any Financial Plan

DollarVersity - Emergency Funds a vital part of any financial plan

Given the state of the economy, as well as people’s propensity to spend rather than save having an emergency fund is necessary now, more than ever. I’m sure everyone thinks that job lay-offs, unforeseen medical or automobile expenses, or even natural disasters are problems for the next person to worry about, but then again that’s why it’s called an “emergency fund” and not the “Christmas account” or “summer vacation to Disney account”. Be advised, each person’s individual circumstances will determine how much attention this should get. This is not a “one size fits all” solution. And, before you roll your eyes and say “Oh boy, yetanother article on how much should be in an emergency plan” or “Holy crap, how many times can people write about where to put their emergency savings”, you can rest assured this is about neither of those topics.

Do Not Forget Gas And Toll Prices In Your Savings Plan

DollarVersity - Do Not Forget Gas And Toll Prices In Your Savings Plan

Lots of people are getting smart about shopping these days. Checking online retailers for cheaper offers compared to local stores. Signing up for store emails to get coupons and sales notifications. Saving up before making purchases to avoid paying credit card interest. One thing however that is not getting the attention it deserves is the cost of getting to and from the point of purchase. The amount of gas used as well as any tolls necessary to drive to the store where the purchase is going to be made should be strongly considered before making the trip to any store.

Let’s All Play The Money Transfer Game

DollarVersity - Let's All Play The Money Transfer Game

What? The Money Transfer Game? What the heck is that!? Yes, the Money Transfer Game. Please bear with me, you will find out all about it soon enough (and, I’m making up the rules as I go  ). Just please hold all question until the end, as you may hear the answer to your particular question during the presentation. Many people find it hard to actually save money. They can not spend on certain items, but that isn’t the same as actually putting it away in a savings or investment account, since they usually end up spending the money on something else anyway. So they turn to other tricks to help them get the job done, such as using envelopes (which I never could fully understand), falsify their checkbook (which just seems foolish to me), or anything else that someone comes up with, so I figured I would try my hand at designing a game that actually accomplishes the saving part of the practice. So, without further delay, I present to you….
