Done With Tax Returns And Giving Away $100

Today marks the first day that I do not have to think about preparing peoples’ tax returns. This was a particularly difficult tax season as one of the partners in the firm had a brain tumor removed in December and didn’t play a large part, essentially leaving the bulk of the work to myself and the other partner (plus a temp for a couple weeks, but he really sucked and we had to redo most of his work anyway). It’s a pretty nice feeling to have taxes behind me for a little while, and I have to admit that the day does seem a little brighter, although this is South Florida and it’s supposed to be sunny anyway!

In celebration of this large burden being over for now, I’m giving $100 cash to some lucky reader out there. Will that lucky someone be you? It won’t be if you don’t enter, so go ahead and get as many entries as you can to increase your odds!

And, while you’re here, why don’t you browse the site a little bit. I’m sure there will be at lease one article you find interesting. On the off chance there isn’t, please, please, please send me a message and let me know what topic(s) you’s like to see covered and I’ll get some related content up for you.

Good Luck To All Who Enter!

The fear that you make a mistake in it (you classify something wrong or so) and 10 years later they hit you with a retroactive bill, a fine and an interest bill. Here in Thailand that would be possible.

I’m oh so glad to be done with tax season. It was rough, I had to pay several thousand dollars and it brings tears to my eyes to be sending all that money bye-bye. :(  Congrats on being done for the season!

I know people say you shouldn’t want a refund, but I was so glad to get mine!  Congrats on surviving another tax season!

Since I am a professional tax preparer as well (on a very small scale), my taxes are always the last to be done. I hate to admit that I actually filed my 2010 return in January 2012! That won’t happen this year, but I’m still late once again.

What a great way to celebrate getting your taxes done! What do you think about the FairTax, would you be for something like that instead? It’s pretty cool . . . allows you to pay your taxes as a sales tax not an income tax, which is so much easier in my opinion.

    • http://www.dollarversity.com Eric J. Nisall – DollarVersity

I’m not sold on it to be honest with you John.  In essence it would appear to put everyone on a level playing field, but the reality is that not everyone is on the same level.  One of my issues is the people who are currently in lower tax brackets (who are required to file returns) would now be faced with a higher tax rate.  There would be no more incentive for people to return to school or otherwise further their education with no more tax credits.  Where would the incentives for people to go back to school and better themselves come from?  How can you apply the same policy to lower-income taxpayers and the ultra-rich?

Tying taxes to spending just seems ridiculous to me since it would essentially promote a contraction of the economy as people will try to avoid paying taxes by spending less, which if we’re honest, really isn’t the best thing for the economy.  If you ask me, the more you earn the more you should pay is a good standard.  I have no problem paying taxes because I understand that it means that I made money.  Maybe it’s because I do understand how the system works, so I could be biased.

And in all seriousness, what would be the next step?  Throwing out the judicial system since it’s not always fair and just?  Getting rid of political offices and the governmental structure as it currently exists?  Sometimes, the things that people don’t understand are simply seen as evil and unnecessary.  Regardless of what system is in place, you can never placate everyone.
